 Caring for Pet Rats

We do sometimes have pet rats when available! We have both dumbo-ear and normal-ear, in various patterns and colors, as well as some hairless rats. They are $10 for one, and $15 for two. It is recommended to get at least two, as they are very social creatures, and will try to escape far more often if they are on their own, even with a lot of human attention.

Rats are generally pretty simple to take care of and don't tend to need much, although they can seem overwhelming. Here's a quick fact list, to help get you prepared.

Quick Facts

--They can be kept on wood shaving bedding, which needs to be changed at least once a week, or fleece blanket bedding, which needs to be changed and washed every 3/4 days.

--They need to be kept in a cage or habitat large enough for them to run around in., with gaps small enough they can't squeeze through and get out. Bigger is better - the smaller the cage, the more they will have to be in their own pee and poo, which can become quite dirty.

--If they begin to stink, change the bedding and give the container/cage a washing out (if applicable).

--They should have water made available at all times. They can become dehydrated easily, especially in hotter temperatures, leading to a less healthy meal for your pet. They may use water bowls as toilets, so water bottles with the dripper/round ball ends.

--Rodent specific food can be found at your local store.
