Superworm Care Sheet

More than likely, you purchased far more super-worms than your pet(s) can eat in one sitting, and have to figure out how to keep them alive until the next feeding. We are here to help! Below are our tips and facts to help, and if you're still unsure about anything, feel free to contact us with any questions, and we will be happy to help you!

Storage, Heat & Humidity

Extra super-worms can be stored in a 10 gallon tank or plastic tub or cat litter pan. Add in an egg crate or toilet paper/paper towel cardboard rolls for the worms to crawl on and hide in. If you do cover your container, make sure there are air holes for them to breath, and to ventilate the bedding.

They do require some type of bedding, although any pet store or the local grocery store will most likely have bedding that will work just fine. You can also use oat meal, rolled oats, or wheat bran, and use this as a bedding/food combo.

Store super-worms at room temperature, although avoid keeping them too hot, as they may pupate into beetles, which would be difficult for most pets to eat, as they are large beetles that get feisty.

Even though super-worms look a lot like meal-worms, never refrigerate super-worms!! They will die quickly from the cold - unlike mealworms, they are not good to eat once they get that cold, as they do not hibernate in cold temperatures.

Humidity isn't important, so don't worry about that.

Food & Water

Super-worms can be kept without food for 1-2 weeks, which should be plenty of time between feedings for your pet. If you do find yourself needing to feed your super-worms, you can feed them carrots, as well as brown or sweet potatoes. These will all three also be good sources of hydration for them, so you won't need to worry about water or water crystals. If you don't feed them anything, provide water crystals to avoid cannibalism.

Other Things To Note

While super-worms themselves don't tend to stink, some types of bedding do cause odors, and will need to be cleaned more often than others. If you don't plan to keep them for more than a week or two, using oat meal or rolled oats will keep any odors to a minimum, and are the easiest to throw out once you've fed the last worms to your pet.

Super-worms DO bite, so be aware of this if you handle them by hand. It is recommended to use tongs when handling them, but be careful not to squish them. While they do have hard external shells, they do squish easily under pressure, and can suffocate if held tightly for too long, and some pets won't eat them once they've died.
